Why fences fail in hurricanes
Florida fence failures are almost always one of four things: shallow post depth (under 36 inches), rotted or rusted posts (a 10-year-old line might have a couple of inches of solid steel left below grade), solid privacy screening acting as a sail (a fully slatted 8-ft run takes thousands of pounds of lateral force at 100 mph), or unmaintained hardware (rusted hinges, loose gate operators).
If a perimeter was installed by the lowest bidder, assume it is underperforming. Cheap installs skip post depth and use bright-galvanized fasteners that rust out in a year.

Pre-season inspection (June)
Walk every linear foot of the perimeter. Push on each post, if it moves more than half an inch at the top, the base is compromised. Re-set or replace before storm season.
Check hinges, latches, and gate operators. Florida humidity rusts everything. Spray hinges with marine-grade penetrating oil, tighten loose bolts, and test automatic gate operator limit switches and battery backup.
Look for leaning sections, separated slats, or visible post rot at the base. These are the weak points that fail first.

Storm-day actions (within 48 hours of landfall)
Remove temporary attachments, banners, signage, and windscreen that act as extra wind catchers where they are not structural.
If you have an automatic gate, manually disengage and lock it in the open or closed position. A powered gate can be damaged by wind hitting it mid-cycle.
Clear loose equipment, pallets, and debris from along the fence line. In Cat 2-plus winds they become missiles that take out fence sections.
On a fully screened run under a tropical-storm warning, loosening a section of privacy slats reduces wind load. It is rarely necessary but is the right move ahead of a serious storm.

What survives Florida storms best
Chain link with privacy slats is the most wind-tolerant screened option. Slats flex and bend before they break, where solid panels catch the most wind.
Aluminum ornamental (vertical pickets with gaps) has minimal wind load. The picket profile lets wind pass through, and it survives Cat 3 winds when set in proper concrete.
Open commercial chain link without screening takes the least wind load of all, which is part of why it is the workhorse of perimeter security.
Set posts deep in concrete, sized to Florida wind load. Shallow-set posts are the first thing to go over in a storm, so post depth and concrete are where it pays to do it right.

After the storm
Take photos before touching anything, for insurance documentation.
If posts are leaning or sections are down, do not re-set in saturated soil. Wait 48 to 72 hours for the ground to firm up, or have a crew evaluate.
